YOUR HOLIDAY
AT THE CENTER OF TUSCANY
Discover Colle di Val d’Elsa — a town of history and the City of Crystal
Colle di Val d’Elsa is a medieval gem of around 20,000 inhabitants set in the heart of Tuscany, in a privileged location between Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra. Known throughout the world as the “City of Crystal”, it offers visitors the authenticity of a town that has not yet been reached by mass tourism, where liveability and the typically slow Tuscan pace of life take centre stage.
Here, a holiday becomes a complete experience: you can immerse yourself in the thousand-year history of the Via Francigena, discover unique artisan traditions, or rejuvenate in the unspoilt nature of the River Park along the SentierElsa trail. Palazzo Luparelli is your gateway to this world suspended between art, culture, flavours and wellbeing.
History
Colle di Val d’Elsa is a true medieval treasure chest that has shaped the destiny of Tuscany. In 1269, its walls witnessed the famous Battle of Colle, the decisive clash between the factions of Florence and Siena that changed the political balance of the region.
The town is also the proud birthplace of Arnolfo di Cambio, the legendary medieval architect and sculptor who also worked for the court of the Medici family, creating masterpieces that made him immortal, such as Florence Cathedral, Basilica of Santa Croce and the tower of Palazzo Vecchio.
Walking today through the streets of Colle Alta means retracing this thousand-year heritage, suspended between the stories of ancient routes and the greatness of illustrious figures of the past. The San Pietro Museum and the Palazzo Pretorio Archaeological Museum tell part of the story of the town.
Liveability
Colle di Val d’Elsa is a rare town where the soul of Tuscany still beats to the rhythm of local life. Far from mass tourism, it is a vibrant and authentic place: here the squares are the heart of everyday gatherings, bars and restaurants are genuine meeting places, and traditions are more alive than ever. Taking part in local celebrations or historic food festivals, such as the famous Sagra della Miseria, allows you to experience a unique sense of community, where hospitality blends naturally with the daily life of residents. Staying here means not being simple tourists, but guests of a land that still knows how to tell its own story with sincerity.
Nature and SentierElsa
Just a few steps from the centre of Colle Bassa lies the natural wonder of the Elsa River Park. The SentierElsa is a unique equipped trail that runs alongside the river, offering breathtaking scenery with intensely turquoise waters and lush vegetation.
The highlight of the route is the spectacular Diborrato Waterfall, a dramatic cascade plunging into a deep natural pool. It is a refreshing oasis, ideal for walks, excursions and moments of relaxation, surrounded by the sounds of nature just a short distance from the town.
Craftsmanship
Colle di Val d’Elsa is universally recognised as the “City of Crystal”, an excellence rooted in centuries-old tradition. Thanks to the legacy of its historic glassworks and the skill of master glass cutters known worldwide, the town today produces almost all of Italy’s crystal. Walking through the town, you can still admire the art of glassblowing and hand-crafting — a unique artisan knowledge that transforms raw material into works of extraordinary transparency and beauty. A visit to the Crystal Museum, located in the lower part of the town, is highly recommended.
Via Francigena
Colle di Val d’Elsa is an essential stop along the historic route towards Rome, the Via Francigena. The trail unfolds through breathtaking landscapes, starting from Badia a Coneo and continuing through the areas of Le Vene and Onci, until reaching the rejuvenating thermal waters of Le Caldane. The town section then crosses the heart of the historic centre, allowing pilgrims and visitors to walk among noble palaces and medieval streets. Staying at Palazzo Luparelli means being located directly along this thousand-year-old route, reliving the emotion of a journey that for centuries has connected Europe with Tuscany.
Cuisine
Colle di Val d’Elsa is a true capital of taste, where Tuscan cuisine lives in perfect balance between tradition and innovation. The town boasts unique products such as Gota Cotta di Colle, a local delicacy that originated here and is celebrated for its distinctive flavour. The many high-quality restaurants in the town highlight these local ingredients, offering dishes ranging from elegantly reinterpreted historical recipes to the great classics of the region. Whether in a traditional trattoria or a refined restaurant, every table in Colle offers an authentic and unforgettable gastronomic experience.
